Kenya Safari & Beach – 2008 Season

Trip Code:  SK01

This safari starts and ends in Nairobi, taking in the Masai Mara, Laikipia in central Kenya and a few days relaxing at the coast on the beautiful island of Lamu.

The safari offers a twist on the traditional Kenya itinerary, visiting the less well trodden parts of these popular areas, at a very affordable price.

Package Includes:

Highlights

  • Enjoying the Masai Mara without the crowds
  • Night game drives and walking safaris in a private area of the Mara
  • Horse riding, camel trekking, walking, birding, fishing…Laikipia is Kenya’s adventure playground
  • Mobile camping at Sosian – get close to nature and sleep out under the stars
  • R and R at a small, eco friendly resort on the unspoilt island of Lamu, the ultimate 'no news, no shoes’ beach escape

Offbeat Mara Camp, 4 nights

A seasonal camp, set far away from other lodges and camps, tucked away in a prime wildlife area on the Koyiaki Group Ranch.  The camp sleeps 12 guests in 6 large tents.

Sosian, 4 nights

Sosian, the Samburu word for the wild date palm, combines the tame with the wild. Over 24,000 acres of wild bush are here to explore. Originally built in the 1940s by Italian artisans the recently renovated ranch house sits at the heart of the ranch, surrounded by seven double cottages that can accommodate up to fourteen people.

Kizingo, 3 nights
A small and rustic 8 banda "castaway" beach camp on the south western tip of Lamu Island from which Louis and Mary Jo van Aardt offer a secluded and tranquil escape from the world.
This is a spot where you're likely to catch a tan, catch up on some sleep, and despite the activities still manage to finish a book or two.  Don't visit if you're on a diet....
November to April is the season to swim with dolphins and snorkel, turtles are the big attraction between October and June.

Best time of the year

  • The migration passes through Kenya’s Masai Mara between August and October.   This is the busiest time in the Mara but is popular for a reason - 1.5 million wildebeest, gazelle and zebra on the move is a pretty amazing sight.  Accommodation gets booked up a way in advance, so plan early.
  • There is excellent resident game in the Mara and Laikipia year round so don’t let the migration dictate your plans.
  • The short rains fall during November and April / May but this can be a great time to visit, less people, great rates and a good chance of warm, sunny days between the rain.  Ask us about visiting out of season.
  • Africa's East Coast is dominated by the monsoons - usually very predictable and resulting in nine months of spectacular sunshine from July through to April with wet overcast conditions during May, June and July.

Cost for a typical 11 night safari in high season – USD5,587 per person
