A 5 night/6 night tour along Madagascar's stunning east coast
A unique and fascinating trip through the east coast of Madagascar traveling and staying in the Perinet National Park and on the shores of Ampitabe Lake.

This trip is perfect for experiencing a combination of stunning fauna and flora, beaches, lush forests, and cultural interaction with the local Betsimisaraka.

Highlights

  • Covered by evergreen rainforest and home to many orchid species including the popular vanilla orchid, the east coast is considered to be the garden of Madagascar.  Most of the island's coffee, cloves, bananas and coconuts are grown in these parts.

  • Eastern Madagascar is also the traditional home of the Betsimisaraka, a local ethnic group and second largest tribe in the country, whose culture is characteristic of their many superstitious beliefs.

  • Lemurs: Indri-indri, ring-tailed lemur, black-and-white ruffed lemurs, Coquerel's lemur, Varecia variegata...

  • Reptiles: Parson's Chameleon calumna nasutus, snakes, leeches and frogs etc

  • Birds: Velvet asity, pitta-like ground-roller, Meller's duck, Madagascar crested ibis...

  • Flora: Ravinala, ficus, orchids...

Brief day-to-day Itinerary

Day 1: Collection at Antananarivo (Tana) International Airport and transfer to Perinet National Park.  After booking into the Vakona Forest Lodge, the rest of the day will be spent at leisure and followed by night tour into the forest to discover nocturnal animals.  Dinner and overnight will be spent at Vakona Forest Lodge.

Day 2: Morning excursions into rainforests of Perinet to track lemurs and view the orchids.  Venturing into the Mantadia area, there will be the opportunity to view waterfalls and more impressive flora, butterflies and birds. Dinner and overnight will be at Vakona Forest Lodge.

Day 3: Early morning walk into Perinet National Park followed by a drive to coast for a speedboat transfer to Bush House Lodge on the Ampitabe Lake. Dinner and overnight will be at Bush House Lodge.

Day 4: Visit to a private biotope station after a 30 min walk along the beach.  Opportunity to discover a unique collection of endemic palms, orchids, xerophytes plants and an exhibition of rare reptiles.  After an afternoon at leisure, dinner and overnight will be at Bush house Lodge.

Day 5: Morning hiking tour around the Ampitabe Lake and visits to typical Betsimisaraka villages.  Afternoon boat trip on the Canal des Pangalanes to reach the country's biggest port of Tamatave (Toamasina).  Return flight to Tana for dinner and overnight at La Varangue or Royal Palissandre hotel.

Day 6: Transfer to Tana Internal Airport for connecting flights.
