Whale Watching on the Eastern Coast of Madagascar

A fantastic 5 night/6 day trip offering the unique opportunity of whale watching off the east coast of Madagascar

Brief day-to-day itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to hotel in downtown Tana upon arrival into Antananarivo (Tana) International Airport. The evening is free to discover the city, followed by dinner and overnight at the La Varangue or Royal Palissandre hotel.

Day 2: After breakfast transfer to airport for flight to Sainte-Marie.  Transfer to the Princesse Bora Lodge upon arrival to Sainte-Marie.  The rest of the day will be spent at leisure.

Day 3: The whale watching adventure begins here with an important early morning briefing from the specialists at the MEGAPTERA's base camp. Each guest will play an integral part of the research team and will have a specific set of responsibilities for the duration of the study. 

Such responsibilities could include the following and will be allocated according to knowledge and aptitude:

  • Taking photographs
  • Using the Hydrophone to listen to the whales
  • Locating the whales geographically using GPS
  • Identifying whales using identification pictures
  • Genetic sampling to identify the DNA of each mammal
  • Behavioural studies i.e. the timing of whale dives

Day 4: The second whale watching excursion following the same programme as the day before with dinner and overnight at the Princesse Bora Lodge

Day 5: Excursion to discover the north part of Sainte-Marie Island departing on a motorboat north to Coco-Bay. On the return to the lodge, guests will be transferred to the airport for flights back to the capital, Tana.  Transfer to La Varangue or Royal Palissandre hotel upon arrival.

Day 6: Morning transfer to Tana International Airport for departing flights.
