Highlights
- The Green Season is a phenomenal time to see the National Park whilst the Luangwa River is high and dramatic
- The rains have arrived and the Park has had its thirst of October quenched
- The Park is green and lush and still relatively accessible
- The rain tends to fall in the night, leaving the days warm and sunny and perfect for game viewing followed by a swim in the pool. (In the last 7 seasons of operation, we've only called off 4 drives due to the rain - guests made up for it with a longer drive the following day.
- Photographers love this season particularly as the air is clear, the colours vibrant and the cloud formations stunning
- It’s an ideal time for rare Wild Dog sightings
- Night drives are a specialty, lion and leopard are frequently encountered
- Thornicroft's giraffe and Cookson's wildebeest are endemic
- Superb Birding & Game Viewing:
Over 450 species of birds have been recorded in the Park and surrounding area - Lilian's Lovebird, Western Banded Snake Eagle, Racket-tailed Roller, Collared Palm Thrush, Red-throated Twinspot, African Moustached Warbler and Pel's Fishing Owl are some of Luangwa's highlights. The diversity of mammals is amazing and includes one of the highest populations of Leopard and Hippo in Africa. Thornicroft's Giraffe is an endemic subspecies to the Valley and other interesting mammals include Crawshay's Zebra, Yellow Baboon and Puku.
- The spectacular and elusive African (or Angola) Pitta arrives in Zambia's South Luangwa National Park in early December to breed. It is most vocal during December whilst attracting a potential mate. The "pitta patch" in the National Park is also home to other exciting birds - Narina Trogon, African Broadbill and White-throated Nicator - all calling loudly in the thickets along the Mushilashi River. Other creatures, small and large inhabit the same thickets - Four-toed Elephant Shrew, Bushbuck, Elephant and Lion. Not a place to venture into without a guide and an armed scout.
