Best time of the year

There is abundant resident game throughout the Serengeti all year round.

The migratory herds of wildebeest and zebra move to the southern Serengeti, where the grasslands are rich between December and March. Their young are born from February - March which encourages dramatic predator action and superb game-viewing.

In May as the plains of the south and east dry out, there is movement to the north and west, where there is more grass and more dependable water.  In a dry year, the first wildebeest can be found near the Mara River (the only decent permanent water in the ecosystem) in early July; and in a wet year, around mid August.

The Migration as a whole need not all pass into Kenya and many stay behind or contiunally cross and re-cross the border areas.  This carries on through till October/November, when they will start drifting back south into the Serengeti.

The wet season is from April to June.  Some lodges and camps in the region do close during this period.

Tips and notes:
  • Large herds of resident game are to be found on the Serengeti Plains anytime of the year.
  • Ngorongoro Crater is a most spectacular  natural arena and often described as one of the wonders of the world – an extraordinary natural sanctuary of some of Africa’s  larger mammals.
  • There are few places where you can reliably see such large concentrations of wildlife all year round, enhanced by the striking backdrop of the 600m crater wall.   Despite the other vehicles and tourists, the visit is very well worth while.

Best access:
  • KLM direct Europe to Arusha or Air Tanzania direct Europe to Arusha
  • Daily scheduled flights Nairobi to Kilimanjaro airport, connect to Arusha by road or air charter
