Hwange National Park
- Zimbabwe’s biggest wildlife reserve
- Big Five animals
- The country’s major game viewing destination
Hwange National Park is Zimbabwe’s biggest and oldest game reserve. The over 14 000km² park consists mostly of savanna, scrubland and scattered woodland and is considered to be one of the greatest conservation areas in Africa.
The park has low rainfall and most of the game relies on man-made waterholes, dams and boreholes during the dry winter months. In the north of the park, the vegetation becomes more sparse and natural pans make for great game viewing during the dry season.
The park is known as one of the greatest wildlife parks in Africa and shelters huge herds of elephant, buffalo, zebra as well as the largest concentration of giraffe. There are many predators and endangered species as well.
Hwange boasts an excellent infrastructure, with good roads, shops, restaurants and even an airport. It is, however, not as touristed as many of the better known game parks and therefore offers an unparalleled wilderness experience.
Special features include:
- Over 400 bird species
- Large elephant populations – it is estimated to be one of Africa’s elephant sanctuaries
- Home to a large number of protected species, like wild dog
