Cape Town

  • One of the most beautiful cities in the world
  • Situated at the tip of the African continent
  • Cosmopolitan, vibrant and full of attractions

Cape Town is the southwestern most city on the African continent. It is situated in a natural bowl between the Atlantic Ocean and the city’s famous landmark, Table Mountain. It is the oldest city in the country, dating back to 1652 when Dutch settlers set up a halfway station for ships travelling to the East from Europe.

Over the next few centuries, French and English immigrants arrived, all bringing their own culture to the mixing pot. As a result, Cape Town features a vibrant mixture of different cultures and traditions – from grand wine estates with Cape Dutch architecture, to lively township life just outside of the city centre.

Special features include:
  • Table Mountain
One of the city’s most photographed sites, Table Mountain stretches just over 1000m into the skies. A revolving cable car takes visitors to the top for breathtaking views of the city, Atlantic Ocean, harbour and beyond. For those who like to exercise, there are a number of walks up the mountain via scenic paths that are not too strenuous (between two and four hour walks.)
  • V&A Waterfront
The redevelopment of the city’s harbour into a major entertainment and shopping area, has quickly become one of the city’s biggest attractions. Outdoor restaurants offer great views of Table Mountain and the harbour, with seals and sea gulls always ready to entertain visitors. Harbour cruises and ferries to Robben Island also depart here
  • Robben Island
Only a couple of kilometres off the coast of Cape Town, lies the tiny island that became an infamous prison during the Apartheid years. Its most famous inmate was Nelson Mandela, who spent 18 years on the island. It is now a World Heritage Site and visitors can tour the island and the prison, which serves as a tribute to the human spirit and to triumph, bravery and victory over adversity
  • Cape Point
Situated approximately 60km outside the city centre towards the southern tip of the continent, lies Cape Point within the Cape Peninsula National Park. The landscape features dramatic cliffs and spectacular views as well as the sight of two oceans meeting: the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean
  • Beautiful beaches
During summertime, Cape Town’s many beaches are extremely popular both with locals and foreigners. All of them have white, soft sand and clear water and each has its own charm and appeal, though the most popular are probably Clifton and Camps Bay. The beaches are within 10 minutes drive from the city – one of the reasons why Cape Town is a favourite holiday destination.
