Very few people know about Namibia’s fabulous attractions and its potential as a top tourism destination in Southern Africa. By the same token, not many are aware that this country is safe, stable and a joy to visit.

Q: Is Namibia a safe country to visit?
A:
Namibia is one of the safest countries to visit in Southern Africa. It is politically completely stable and has a relatively strong economy. The roads, infrastructure and accommodation are excellent.  As in any foreign country, it is important to use common sense.  Don’t carry valuables in plain view, keep cameras hidden and don’t go about walking alone at night.  Be aware of onlookers and make use of hotel safety deposit boxes.  Travellers with tour operators/groups are the least at risk.

Q: I have heard that it gets very hot in Namibia. When is the best time to come here?
A:
It gets extremely hot during summer, which is roughly between November and April. Temperatures frequently rise into the 30 degrees and sometimes even into the 40's.  Winter is the best time to come, as the temperatures remain pleasantly warm at around 25’ C.  It is also the best time for game viewing, as wild animals tend to come to the waterholes to drink.

Q: Where is the best place to see wild animals?
A:
Namibia’s best known wildlife park is the Etosha National Park in northern Namibia.  It is world-famous for its great animal diversity, which includes the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo).  The park covers 22,270 kmē of open plains and bush surrounding the Etosha salt pan in the middle of the park.  Due to the sparse vegetation, animals are relatively easy to see.

Q: Where is the best place to see dunes?
A:
The Namib Desert is one of the oldest deserts in the world, estimated to be approximately 80-million-years-old.  Most of the desert is part of the Namib-Naukluft Park, which is the largest conservation area in the country.  From open plains to rolling dunes, the desert landscape is utterly breathtaking.  It is possible to drive to one of the highest dunes in the world at Sossusvlei and Sesriem.  There is a very rustic campsite at Sesriem and more comfortable accommodation is available around Sossusvlei, otherwise you may elect to drive here just to get out of your car and walk up the several hundred metre high dunes and marvel at the spectacular view from the top.
