The Caprivi Strip

  • Beautiful landscape
  • Stunning game reserves
  • Namibia’s answer to the Okavango Delta

The Caprivi is a thin, flat tongue of land approximately 400km long in north-eastern Namibia, stretching eastwards and bordering Botswana, Angola, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Unlike the rest of the country, which is dry and mostly arid, the Caprivi is lush and wet. It has been described as Namibia’s answer to the Okavango Delta, as the landscape is criss-crossed by rivers, islands and wetlands.

As the Caprivi falls into the tropical climate zone, the climate tends to be hot and moist, with a high rainfall. The main rivers are the Kwando, Kavango, Linyati, Chobe and Zambezi Rivers with the most important town being Katima Mulilo, which boasts an airport, colourful street markets and shops.

It is a region of remarkable game viewing and most animals are within protected game reserves. There are over 400 recorded bird species, one of which is the rare African Fin Foot. It is also an excellent destination for fly-fishing. As there is a tarred road throughout the Caprivi Strip, it is possible to drive all the way to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.

Special Features Include:
  • Mudumu National Park
Situated in the far eastern corner of the Caprivi Strip on the Kwando River, Mudumu spans 850km˛ of lovely wetlands and thick riverine vegetation. Animals to see include elephant, lion, buffalo, hippos and Cape clawless otters. It is known as an excellent birdwatching and fishing destination. There are many activities, including boat rides and visits to nearby fishing villages
  • Mamili National Park
Like Mudumu, Mamili lies in the far north-eastern part of the Caprivi and is very much an off-the-beaten track destination, accessible only to 4x4 vehicles. It is known for its beauty and fantastic bird numbers (over 430 species). Its biggest appeal is its completely unspoilt and wild atmosphere
  • Mahango Game Reserve
Mahango is a fairly small reserve of 254km˛ towards the western end of the Caprivi Strip. It contains a wide range of habitats like grassland, woodland, floodplain, riverine forests and reed beds that are home to over 60 mammal and 350 bird species. It is the only park in Namibia in which visitors are able to go on walking safaris without a guide
