Bazaruto Archipelago

  • Idyllic subtropical island chain
  • Stunning coral reefs

The Bazaruto Archipelago is a beautiful string of islands off the coast of southern Mozambique. The islands have gained a reputation as one of the most beautiful and affordable getaways in Africa – and most are protected as part of a Marine National Park, to preserve their fantastic natural heritage.

Best known islands are the Bazaruto, Benguerra, Magaruque and Santa Carolina, each of these sheltering exotic and luxurious resorts on the beach and offering fantastic holidays. The islands boast balmy weather, long stretches of isolated beaches framed by palm trees and off the coast, there are stunning coral reefs. The fishing is also good and the diving - excellent.

Special features include:
  • Benguerra Island
This island is the second largest in the Bazaruto Archipelago. It consists of beautiful beaches, dunes, inland lakes and indigenous forests. The resorts are discreetly tucked away and suitably close to the beach. It is especially a diver’s paradise with stunning coral reefs and tropical fish surrounding dive locations at Two Mile Reef. Fishing by lure  is also popular and the lodges host annual big game fishing competitions

  • Fauna and Flora
The archipelago is regarded as an ecological gem and most of its islands are part of the Marine National Park, which was created for creatures like the dugong. These gentle marine mammals are highly endangered and in urgent need of protection. There is a wide variety of seabirds, Palearctic waterbird migrants and 25 species of waders. The waters are home to over 2 000 fish species and over 120 coral species, four whale and five dolphin species. On the extensive grass beds, one may see all five marine turtle species

  • Bazaruto Island
This 30km strip of land lies approximately 30km offshore from Vilankulo on the mainland. Ecologically similar to the Benguerra Island, the island also attracts its fair share of tourists, offering them stunning white sandy beaches, sand dunes, indigenous forest and crystal clear waters.
