Moremi Game Reserve
- One of the most beautiful wildlife reserves in Africa
- Middle of the Okavango Delta
- Superb photographic opportunities
Nearly thirty years since the proclamation as a reserve by Chief Moremi’s family, the Moremi Game Reserve is now one of the most scenic and varied game parks in Africa. The reserve covers some 4,871 square kilometres in the eastern section of Botswana’s Okavango Delta, and is renowned for its great diversity of plant and animal life and is the premier safari attraction in the delta. Consisting of waterways surrounded by two main islands: Chief’s Island in the west, and Mopane Tongue in the east, Moremi combines mopane woodland and acacia forests, pans, wide floodplains and a multitude of lagoons.
The wide variety of habitats within the reserve gives Moremi the opportunity to boast a rich diversity of animal and prolific bird species and is a favourite for photography enthusiasts. Excursions throughout Moremi’s waterways by traditional mokoros provide a unique view of the stunning surroundings and wildlife on offer. A range of animals such as giraffe, lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena and various antelope accompanies a significant elephant population. Wild Dog, whose numbers are diminishing rapidly elsewhere, are regularly sighted at Moremi and it has been suggested that up to 30% of all remaining wild dog live within the reserve.
The reserve is best visited during the dry season when the wildlife concentrate around permanent waterholes between July and October. The winter months between May and August can be cold at night and during the rainy season between October and late November, the weather can be extremely hot throughout both the day and night. As the reserve itself is fenced, and contains a diversity of habitats, game sightings can be guaranteed throughout the year.
