Okavango Delta
- The world’s largest inland delta
- One of Africa’s most beautiful locations
- Fantastic game watching by Mokoro
The Okavango Delta has been described as one of the most beautiful places in Africa. The delta originates with the Okavango River in the uplands of Angola and then spreads out over the sands of the Kalahari in Botswana, becoming a watery wilderness of champagne-coloured water and reed-covered islands and the world’s biggest inland delta.
Each year after the rains, the flood of fresh water flows inland, spreading out in a fan over a 15 000km² area. The countless islands, channels and waterways support a wide variety of animal and birdlife and is home to several ecosystems. The heart of the delta can be accessed only by air, making it an extremely remote, but also exclusive destination.
Most game viewing activities are conducted via mokoro or dug-out canoes and gliding past hippos and wildlife on the island shores is a fascinating experience. There are no fences between the private reserves and concessions of the delta so the entire Okavango merges into a unified animal kingdom of significant proportions.
Special features include:
- Moremi Wildlife Reserve
Moremi is situated in the heart of the Okavango Delta, covering a 3000km² area of one of the world’s most pristine wilderness areas. There are two main islands: Chiefs Island in the west and Mopane Tongue in the east. There is very good game viewing all year round and there are over 550 bird species, so it’s a paradise for birdwatchers
- Jao Reserve
A private wildlife reserve of 60000 hectares, in the western Okavango Delta. The Jao Reserve consists of a superb variety of habitats ranging from permanent waterways and lagoons, to dry Kalahari grasslands. The variety of wildlife is dependent on the water levels, with game viewing at its best on the enormous plains once the winter floodwaters have subsided between October and March.
- Vumbura Concession
The unique ‘sausage tree’ epitomises this area that contains both wetland and savannah habitats and associated species of wildlife and birds. Wildlife that can be seen from Vumbura includes Hippos, Crocodiles and Waterbuck and the open plains animals of Sable, Kudu and Wildebeest. Herds of Buffalo and Elephant can also be seen along with the associated predators of Lion, Leopard and Cheetah.
- Pom Pom Private Concession
With a variety of habitats ranging from grassland savannah to acacia bushveld, Delta floodplains, mopane forest and permanent Delta channels, the Pom Pom private concession offers a true all-round Delta experience. The concession is a favourite for photographic safaris and offers night-drives and is home to all the major predators and plains game.
- Chitabe Concession
In the south of the Okavango Delta, the Chitabe Concession has the classic scenery of rivers, waterways and marshlands with seasonal floodplains contrasting with dry woodland and open savannah grasslands. Wild Dog sightings are a special attraction of the Chitabe Concession, which falls within a vast study area of 1200 sq miles in which vital research on the species is being conducted.
- Duba Plains
A private reserve of 30 000 hectares in the northeast of the Okavango Delta, renowned for its high concentrations of Buffalo and four resident prides of lions. Often hunting the Buffalo by day, the Lions, together with a great diversity of wildlife, provide fantastic opportunities for photography enthusiasts.
- Wildlife
Game viewing is excellent and four of the Big Five can be seen (elephants, lion, buffalo and leopard – just no rhino). Other rare animals unique to the delta are the sitatunga and the puku antelope. Pods of hippo can be seen all over the delta. The cooler winter months from March to September are the best time to visit to see wildlife
