Mgahinga is situated in the southwest of Uganda and is the country's smallest National Park, covering an area of only 33.7 kmē.
The park was established in 1991 to protect the endangered mountain gorillas in the Ugandan sector of the Virunga Volcanoes, which form the border with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Mgahinga is a dense tropical rainforest on the lower slopes of the volcanoes where the vegetation includes bamboo and various types of lichens and mosses, an important delicacy to the few mountain gorillas that remain in the Virungas.
There are approximately 700 mountain gorillas left in the world, believed to be found in Mgahinga National Park, the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest to the north, and the Parc National des Volcans in Rwanda.
There is only one group of mountain gorillas in Mgahinga that is accustomed to humans, known as the Nyakagezi group, these gorillas can be visited on a gorilla tracking excursion.
Other animals that can be found in the park include Buffalo, Elephants, Bush Bucks, the threatened Golden monkeys and many more.
