Tanzania’s southern coast is an idyllic destination of unspoilt beaches stretching on for miles and miles, framed by palm trees and sandy coastlines washed by the warm Indian Ocean. The most popular coastal region lies south of Dar Es Salaam.
The coast is especially popular with travellers who have finished the safari circuit or a climb up Mt Kilimanjaro, as the numerous resorts and coastal towns are a fantastic way to recharge and revitalise even the weariest of travellers.

- Ras Kutani
Situated about 50km south of Dar es Salaam, this beautiful and unspoilt beach stretches on for about four kilometres. The beach is set on a freshwater lagoon and surrounded by tropical forests, home to colobus monkeys and colourful birds. There is a whole range of activities on offer here, including sailing, wind surfing, snorkelling and fishing
- Mafia Island
This beautiful tropical island lies just off the coast of southern Tanzania and spans 390km˛. It is a diver and anglers dream, with over six major dive sites offering some of the best diving in East Africa. A typical island paradise, Mafia Island also has much to offer in the way of culture, as the history of the island goes back hundreds of years as a key port on the trade routes. The famous dive spot of Chole Bay is a protected marine park with two beaches and a stunning unbroken coral reef
- Dar es Salaam
The former capital of Tanzania is still the country’s chief financial centre. Most of the economic hub is in the scenic harbour, from which traditional dhow boats arrive and depart continuously. The city’s name means “Harbour of Peace” and is surrounded by coastal resorts. The city’s architecture and markets reveal a history that stretches back many years and bears strong colonial influences
