Vwaza Marsh
- Pristine wilderness
- Great game viewing
- Includes Lake Kazuni
The Vwaza Marshes lie in the north-east of the country, close to the Zambian border. They are at the foot of the Nyika Plateau and consist of 1000kmē of unspoilt vegetation that ranges from floodplains and wetlands to woodland. In the south, the Luwewe River flows into Lake Kazuni, where the birdwatching is extremely good.
The Vwaza Marsh Game Reserve is not well known as it does not have very good infrastructure and a lack of facilities, yet the game viewing is superb and the scenery is beautiful. There are a number of 4x4 tracks around the reserve and it is also possible to go on walking trails, accompanied by a game ranger.
The reserve is home to large numbers of hippo, elephant, buffalo and a wide variety of antelope. The area is known for birdwatching and is especially good for spotting waders. Other birds to see include Goliath herons, openbill storks, African fish eagle, saddle-billed stork, numerous water birds, weavers, birds of prey and the white-winged starling.
