Lake Victoria
- Second largest freshwater lake in the world
- Lovely lakeside scenery
- Origin of the Nile
Lake Victoria is situated in central Africa, bordering Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya. Travelling to these countries across the water is no longer possible and lake trips can only be made from Kisumu and other ports in Kenya, which incidentally, owns 3 785km˛ of the lake.
The lake is only 100m deep, but very wide, covering a total surface of 70 000km˛. The area is very scenic, with the tranquil lake, surrounded by green hills, tea plantations and game farms. It is the country’s most populated region and the most productive.
The lake was confirmed as the source of the Nile River by H.M. Stanley in 1875 and following this discovery, the colonial powers started paying more attention to East Africa.
Special features include:
- Kisumu
The third largest town in the country, Kisumu also has a game sanctuary and animal orphanage at Impala Park. Hippo Point is an excellent place to view the lake. There is also the Kisumu Museum, outside of which is a traditional Luo homestead. The town is said to be the best place to buy Kisii soapstone carvings
- Ndunga Beach
This small fishing village is a great place to see how the lake fishermen live. It is possible to hire canoes and to go on excursions on Lake Victoria to see hippos and birds
