Mombasa
- Major sea gateway for East Africa
- Kenya’s oldest city
- Popular holiday spot
The scenic city of Mombasa is situated on the south-eastern coast of Kenya. It has a colourful history that goes back several hundred years, to the 12th century when it was established as an important post by Arabic traders. The arrival of the Portuguese in the 16th century brought a tumultuous time of violence and colonial rule. The city continued as an important trading post and harbour, a role which it still plays today.
The city is situated on Mombasa Island, which is connected to the mainland. It is the largest port in East Africa and vital to the Kenyan economy, as the centre for all imports and exports. But the city is also a popular vacation destination, due to the vibrant nightlife, many attractions and the beautiful sandy beaches.
Both towards the north and the south of the city, lie stunning resorts and beach hotels, right on the shores of the balmy Indian Ocean. Just off the coastline lies a coral reef that continues for 480km along the coast and is home to breathtaking marine life. The city offers an interesting mix of cultures and traditions with evidence of the Portuguese rule and subsequent Arabic culture evident in the architecture, food and general way of life. City attractions include the Mwembe Tayari market place, the 16th century Fort Jesus and a variety of Hindu temples and Protestant cathedrals.
