Chyulu Hills Area

  • Overlooks Mount Kilimanjaro
  • One of the world’s newest mountain ranges
  • Great diversity of fauna and flora

The Chyulu Mountain range lies in southern Kenya, close to the border of Tanzania. To the north-west lies the Amboseli National Park, while the huge Tsavo game reserves lie to the south-east. Volcanic activity was recorded in these mountains only 500 years ago, making it of the world’s newest mountain ranges.

Much of the area is protected in the Chyulu Hills National Park, an area of rolling grasslands, thick woods and forests that are home to a wide range of wildlife. There are 34 mammal species, among them lion, cheetah, elephant and rhino and antelope like oryx, gerenuk and zebra. It is possible to go walking as well as horse riding in the reserve where Masai herdsmen and their cattle live among the wildlife. From the mountains, magnificent views of nearby Mount Kilimanjaro can be enjoyed.

Special features include:
  • Tsavo
Tsavo National Park is Kenya’s largest game reserve and one of the biggest wildlife parks in the world. At 21 000km², it is divided into two parks, Tsavo East and Tsavo West. It is a scenic region of rivers, volcanic hills and plains and home to more than 60 major mammal species. Tsavo East is known for large populations of elephant and buffalo and it is possible to see the Big Five (elephant, buffalo, rhino, leopard and lion)
  • Amboseli National Park
Although Amboseli is a fairly small park at 392km², its world-famous location at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro makes it a popular destination. It is also home to over 50 mammal species and more than 400 bird species. Although the world’s highest free-standing mountain is actually across the border in Tanzania, Amboseli offers one of the best views and fantastic photographic opportunities of Kilimanjaro
