The image of wild animals crossing a grassy plain with snow-capped Mt Kilimanjaro in the back is one of the most enduring pictures of Africa – these images have also made Amboseli famous. The park contains five wildlife habitats: open plains; acacia woodland; rocky thorn bush country; swamps and marshland. In the middle, lies Lake Amboseli. This temporary lake is flooded only during heavy rainfall.
Special features include:
- Mount Kilimanjaro
The Amboseli landscape is dominated by the largest freestanding mountain in the world – Mount Kilimanjaro. Although the mountain is several kilometres away and across the border in Tanzania, it dominates every angle of Amboseli. Most visitors come to Amboseli for the perfect view of Kilimanjaro, which is visible 5km above the plains. The best time to see it, is at dawn and sunset, when the clouds generally lift, creating excellent photographic opportunities
