Kafue National Park
- Zambia’s top game reserve
- Good game sightings
- Over 400 bird species
The Kafue National Park is the country’s biggest and best game reserve – at 22 400km˛ it is roughly the size of Wales – and comprises a wide rage of habitats. From mopane forests to sweeping grasslands, floodplains, lakes and rivers, Kafue offers visitors a bewildering range of things to see and do.
The Kafue River runs through the park, with lush riverine forests on its banks, finally flowing into the Lake Itezhi-tezhi. Kafue is well-known for predators like lion, leopard and cheetah although it is equally famous for huge herds of antelopes such as red lechwe, puku, sable, roan, oribi, duiker, defassa waterbuck, tsessebe, hartebeest, zebra and buffalo.
The birdwatching is excellent, especially around the lakeside and rivers, where you may see wattled crane, purple crested loerie and Pel’s fishing owl. Fishing is excellent as well, especially for bream, barbell and freshwater pike.
Special features include:
- Busanga Plains
This spectacular wetland is situated in the north of the park and is a watery wilderness that is flooded once a year. It is quite unspoilt and undeveloped, adding to the region’s charm. Wildlife found here include hippo, various antelope and even lion can occasionally be seen in the water!
- Itezhi-tezhi Lake
This huge inland sea is in the south of the park and it is possible to go for scenic boat rides here. A variety of animals frequent this neck of the woods and it is a heaven for birds like fish eagles, cormorants, spoonbills and goliath herons. The lake is also popular with anglers and there is an annual fishing competition
- Nanzhilla Plains
The grasslands that cover Nanzhilla are known as a home for large antelope herds as well as elephant and cheetah
