Amber Mountain National Park
Amber Mountain National Park (Montagne d'Ambre National Park) is situated in the far north of Madagascar just 40km south of Antsirana, and is northern Madagascar’s most visited attraction.
The Park was created in 1958 and covers 18,200 hectares of prominent volcanic massif, to preserve the regions biological treasures.
When it comes to flora and fauna Amber Mountain is more or less an extension of the eastern rainforest, although it does have a number of endemic species not found south. The forest is lush with over 3.5m of rain each year making the forest massif a “Water tower” and a botanist’s heaven.
Of the seven lemur species in the park, the most notable are the crowned lemur and Sanford's brown lemur. The reptile and amphibian life is also diverse, and includes frogs, geckoes, chameleons and snakes. Birdwatchers won't be disappointed as 73 species of bird have been recorded in the park.
During the dry season the park is ideal for walking and has roughly 20km of maintained tracks allowing close contact with the lush wildlife.
For any season you are advised to take:
- Warm clothes even in daytime
- Lightweight/breathable waterproof clothing
- A change of shoes
- Mosquito/leech repellent
- Sun-cream and cap
- Plastic bags for rubbish
