Rwenzori Mountains National Park

  • Great hiking and climbing opportunities
  • Majestic scenery

This 996kmē National Park protects the upper slopes and distinctive glacial peaks of the Ruwenzori Mountains, which run for almost 120km along the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo border west of Kasese and Fort Portal.

The Ruwenzoris are known above all for their challenging hiking and climbing potential - it should be stressed that hiking in the Ruwenzori requires above-average fitness and stamina, largely due to the muddy conditions - but they also support a variety of animals, including 70 mammals and 177 bird species.

A variety of large mammals inhabit the lower slopes, but the Rwenzoris are more renowned for their majestic scenery and varied vegetation.

The six-day loop hiking trail is a tough but rewarding hike, taking in all vegetation zones and the glacial peaks. Shorter hikes can easily be arranged.

The Rwenzori Mountains National Park can be visited at anytime of the year, however the drier months of December-February and June to August are more favourable.anytime.
