Bwindi National Park is situated in the southwest of Uganda, on the edge of the western Rift Valley on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo next to the Parc National des Virungas.
It is one of the largest natural forests (331 sq. km) in East Africa and has an average annual rainfall of almost 1,500mm.
The national park supports a large number of plants and animals widespread to the region, but most notably approximately half of the world’s 700 remaining mountain gorillas.
Tourism in Bwindi focuses on gorilla tracking mostly, where more than half of the world’s mountain gorilla population is resident: an estimate of 280-320 individuals. Bwindi National Park is also home to at least 120 mammal species, more than any other national park except Queen Elizabeth National Park.
You can visit the park at any time of the year, though the rainy season between April-May and September-November makes conditions for gorilla tracking a lot more challenging.
