Kampala
- Scenic city
- Base for mountain gorilla expeditions
The capital of Uganda is a scenic city that is said to be built on seven hills. Colonial-style buildings, modern skyscrapers and tree-lined avenues dominate the skyline.
Kampala is the seat of government and the vibrant city centre features parks and hotels as well as markets, shops and restaurants. The surrounding countryside and nearby Lake Victoria make for great views.
Special features include:
- Mountain gorillas
The mountain gorillas of Central Africa are highly endangered, with only a couple of hundred left in the wild. Due to the unstable political environment in countries like Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda is the most viable option for those wanting to see these amazing creatures in their natural environment. Just over 300 gorillas live in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and the Mgahinga National Park and gorilla tracking is strictly controlled. Only a limited number of visitors are allowed each day, but the experience is rated extremely highly and worth the wait.
