Tanzania is so big and the attractions so diverse that it is a bit bewildering to know where to go and what to do. We have compiled a list of Frequently Asked Questions to help you plan your visit to Tanzania...

Q: How safe is Tanzania?
A: Tanzania has always been considered a safe country for visitors. In the light of recent world events however, Zanzibar and the mainland are considered potentially dangerous destinations for Americans and Western travellers. Visitors to Zanzibar are advised to avoid clubs, bars and public places, any gatherings or political rallies. Avoid the areas on the country’s borders with Rwanda and Burundi as these are considered unsafe. Street crime is generally also a problem in cities like Dar es Salaam and on Zanzibar island and tourists should exercise caution, hide their valuables, lock their car and hotel doors and avoid walking in remote areas and on desolate footpaths.

Q: Where is the best place to see game?
A:
Tanzania is full of amazing game reserves and game parks and it is difficult to pick just one. The Serengeti National Park is regarded as one of the greatest wilderness areas in the world. There are no fences between the Serengeti and the Masai Mara game reserve in  Kenya, so game is able to move freely between these two areas. During the Great Migration, millions of animals migrate between the two reserves in what has been described as one of the greatest wildlife spectaculars in the world. Another great game viewing area is the Ngorongoro Crater, which is the largest intact volcanic caldera and home to huge animal populations. The crater forms a natural bowl with steep walls and you will be able to see the Big Five as well as loads of antelope etc.

Q: I would like to combine a safari with an island experience. Is this possible?
A: Absolutely – it’s a fantastic package that most visitors opt for. You can come for a week or 10-day safari and end if off with a couple of days on Zanzibar, which offers lovely island experiences. Zanzibar is a tropical island of white, sandy beaches with palm trees and the warm Indian Ocean lapping on its shores. Equally lovely islands are Pemba and Mafia Islands off the Tanzanian mainland, which are easily combined in a safari package.

Q: When is the best time to visit?
A: If you are coming to see the Great Migration, it would be best to time your visit for April-June, when the animals start moving through the Serengeti towards the Masai Mara in Kenya. During June and July, they are usually in the Western Corridor.
