Zanzibar consists of two main islands: Unguja (also known as Zanzibar Island) and the smaller Pemba. It is one of the top tourist destinations in Tanzania and indeed, in Africa. The semi-autonomous island archipelago is situated just off the coast of mainland Tanzania. With its sparkling white beaches, idyllic resorts and exotic history, it is a destination with much to offer visitors.
Also known as the Island of Spices, Zanzibar became famous for the cloves, cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, cumin, pepper and other spices that grew here in abundance. Until recently, Zanzibar was the world’s biggest producer of cloves.
Special features include:
- Stone Town
This World Heritage Site is the historic and cultural Mecca of Zanzibar. It bears strong witness to the Arab traders who arrived in Zanzibar centuries ago to trade in slaves and spices; the island’s main commodities. The picturesque cobbled streets, old architecture, plantations and palaces make for excellent sightseeing

Right around the island, various beaches boast soft sand and balmy, turquoise waters, coconut palm trees and tranquil lagoons. Coral reefs provide great diving opportunities for water sport enthusiasts and there are numerous activities for visitors staying at any one of the idyllic resorts dotted around the island
