Liwonde National Park

Situated on the Shire River, Liwonde National Park has been described as Malawi’s finest game reserve. It is a lush area of unspoilt riverine vegetation stretching over 548km², from the eastern bank of the Shire River to Lake Malcombe in the north.

It is the country’s finest wildlife reserve with a variety of game and over 300 bird species. Large numbers of hippo, crocodiles, elephants, antelope and zebras can be seen especially on the banks of the Shire, while leopard, lion and serval are more difficult to spot. Two rhinos were recently introduced from South Africa and are called Justerini and Brooks, after their sponsor J&B Whisky.

The riverine vegetation and mopane and grassland habitats are excellent for spotting birds such as Lillian’s lovebird, Livingstone’s flycatcher, palmnut vulture, Bohm’s bee-eater, whitebacked night heron and brown breasted barbet.
