Shiwa Ng'andu House

Zambia

Accommodation
  • Accommodates 4-5 couples
  • Beautiful lake and wilderness scenery
  • Comfortable en-suite bedrooms with hardwood furnishings

This majestic house and estate was established in the 1920’s by Sir Stewart Gore-Browne and his wife Lorna, and is located in the remote heart of northern Zambia on the shores of beautiful Lake Shiwa Ng’andu.

The Shiwa Ng’andu estate fell into disrepair after the death of Sir Stewart's eldest daughter, as none of the three grandchildren were in the financial position to maintain it.  However, towards the end of 1999, Shiwa House was purchased by Sir Gore-Browne’s eldest grandson, Charles Harvey and his wife Jo, and has since undergone an extensive restoration project to restore the property and estate to its former glory.

Today Shiwa House stands proud and is open to both resident guests and day visitors.  The house can currently accommodate four to five couples in simple and comfortable en-suite bedrooms with hardwood furnishings and paintings.  In 2001, 10,000 hectares of the private estate around the lake was fenced in and established as a conservation area and has undergone a rigorous re-population project in close co-operation with the local community.

Resident guests have a complete run of the house and archives, and beyond the house the estate provides a multitude of activities to keep all guests busy; from game viewing, boating on Lake Shiwa, fishing, horse riding for experienced riders, walks around the beautiful lawns and well-maintained gardens, and fascinating historical tours.  Superb food arranged from simple wholesome farm fare adds a finishing touch to this unique experience in the heart of northern Zambia.
